What do 5 generations want in the workplace? We actually have an answer...

There is a common question today about what millennial’s want in the workplace or how organizations can meet the needs of the five, very different generations on the job. Then layer on diversity of thought and life experience needs to thrive in an inclusive culture. It’s complex to be sure.

To answer this, we can draw on resources such as Senge’s Learning Organization that incorporates systems thinking, mental models, shared vision, personal mastery, and team learning. We can also incorporate Deci’s self-determination theory that brings mastery, autonomy, and purpose into our work lives. We can borrow from Thaler and Sunstein’s choice architecture because, let’s be honest, nobody likes to be told what to do. This makes Greenleaf’s servant leadership and Collins’ level five leadership also very applicable as a modern day paradigm shift of what it means to lead.

It’s easy to get lost in (or bored with) all the theories and models. But some companies have actually figured this out (see Atlassian’s FedEx Days or Southwest’s Lead with Luv). And so have educators. To sum this all up in one easily digestible video, here’s 17 minutes of answers. What’s good for teens in the classroom is also applicable to adults in the workplace. Enjoy!
